About the Old City

Many artists find reoccurring images appearing and reappearing in their work. For me the Old City has frequently revealed itself in my writing, painting and dreams.

In my art, the Old City is a place that no one person holds the complete map to. It is a place of secret courtyards and vantage points from which to view them. Of perfumed flower shops and sour sewage. It is a place of injustice and efforts to bring about justice. It’s a place of trading and traveling and seeking the divine. It’s a place where love affairs unfold and poets and artists hatch revolutions against empires.

I selected the Old City as the motif for my reflective practice as it encapsulates engaging and exploring complexities. It represents what it is to sit with the difficulties of the present, the hopes of the future and the complex systems in which these two realities exist.
